Aquaponics
Aquaponics is a method of farming that pairs fish and plants in a single, continuous loop.
Aquaponics combines aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (growing plants in water), mimicking the natural cycles found in rivers and lakes. Our Koi fish provide the nutrients, and our basil and lettuce clean the water. It starts with our fish, whose waste is broken down by beneficial bacteria into organic food for the crops. As the plants absorb these nutrients to grow, they filter the water, which flows back to the fish tank clean and oxygenated. This efficient cycle allows us to grow fresh produce year-round in downtown Bellingham using about 90% less water than traditional agriculture, and no pesticides or herbicides.

Our produce is grown for flavor, not for long-haul shipping. Because our farm is indoors and right here within 10 miles of nearly everywhere, we harvest our greens at their peak—usually just hours before they reach your kitchen. You get produce that is clean, vibrant, and incredibly fresh, keeping all the nutrition and crunch that usually gets lost in transit. It’s the difference between lettuce that travels a thousand miles and lettuce that travels three.

To unlock the ultimate in freshness, try any of our basil varieties or our cilantro live- with the roots still on. Take these herbs home and pop them in a jar on your counter and you can harvest the freshest herbs all week long. All of our basil varieties and cilantro are available live or cut.

Sustainability
We built FarmWild Aquaponics to be efficient by design, not just as an afterthought. By bringing agriculture indoors and recirculating our water, we use about 90% less water than a traditional soil farm. We don't need acres of land or heavy tractors to grow food, and because our system is a closed loop, we aren't sending fertilizer runoff into local creeks or the Bay. We’re growing almost 2 acres of produce each year in a small footprint, all within just a few miles of tens of thousands of people and dozens of food businesses and restaurants.
